250 – As Everything in Nature, We are Dynamic Organizations of Interconnected Components …

There is nothing that empirically proves how profoundly interconnected we are with everything in Nature than a verified scientific theory, and John Stewart Bell’s Theorem does that for me.

Bell’s Theorem shows us that in Nature, “there are interactions between events that are too far apart in space and too close together in time for the events to be connected even by signals moving at the speed of light.” [1] Contrary to our dominant scientific understanding of reality, the Theorem shows us that there are interactions faster than the speed of light. This explains how Hydrogen atoms, the most abundant element in our Universe, can have the same basic configuration (one electron orbiting a nucleus) from one end of the Universe to the other. Or how the mind, when we for instance get hurt, can communicate instantaneously with the body to assess the extent of the injury and respond accordingly.

What Bell proved with his Theorem is that there is a world in which the dogmatic prohibitions we impose on Nature, like stating that ‘nothing’ can be faster than the speed of light, do not exist.

Naturally evolving systems – like atoms, cells, you and I, planetary systems, galaxies, the Universe itself – are systems in which, without regards to distance or level of complexity, every component is instantaneously connected with every other component in the system and with the system as a whole. Evolving systems cannot function nor survive amid constantly changing environments without this thorough and immediate interconnectedness. Like an atom, a cell, a planetary system, the Universe itself, you and I cannot be what we are without every part in our bodies instantly and in concert connecting with every other part, so we can go where we want to go, do what we want to do, be what we want to be.

Bell’s Theorem proves how profoundly interconnected we are with everything in Nature. And I believe that once we accept this truth about us, we will be more rational and understanding in our relationship with each other and with the world that gives us life.

9 – Bell’s Theorem and us.

The significance of Bell’s Theorem on how we perceive ourselves and our world is its utter universality: Cohesiveness and relative stability in natural systems, all natural systems, are attained through the instantaneous and intimate interconnectedness of their component elements (see post #7).

Once we are able to accept the fact that human beings are natural systems made out of myriad intimately interconnected components, we will then be able to understand that in order for us to attain a certain sense of direction in space and time and a relative degree of freedom in how we adapt to our world, every one of our components – every atom, every molecule, every cell, every organ, every extremity – must be instantly and intimately linked not only with all the other components in our bodies, but also with us, the commanding component.

In other words, for us to walk to the store to buy something for dinner tonight, the atoms and cells in our right foot must be able to reach some kind of instantaneous agreement not only with the atoms and cells in our left foot, but also with us, the commanding entity in charge of the entire system.

And because most of our actions are instinctive and only a few are well thought-out and self-determined, it is this mostly untapped and unknown capacity to interconnect and unify the entire range of our components that endows us with the power … consciously or unconsciously, and for good or for bad … to affect the course of our own evolution.

7 – Bell’s Theorem …

In 1964, the Irish physicist John Stewart Bell challenged scientific orthodoxy with a Theorem that has been called “The most profound discovery in science”.

The basic premise of the Theorem is that for any given natural system – atom, molecule, cell, human being, solar system, galaxy, Universe – to attain and sustain a relative level of stability and cohesiveness amidst the constant changes of its internal and external environments, every one of its component elements, notwithstanding distance nor level of complexity, must be intimately & instantaneously interconnected with all the other elements in the system and with the system as a whole.

This is a monumental insight into the essence of Nature … of Life itself.

Firstly, it gives a deadly blow to the limitations imposed by Relativity, which presumes that nothing can travel faster than the speed of Light. Secondly, it explains how Hydrogen atoms can be so intimately interconnected from one end of our Universe to the other, that they can all adopt and sustain the same obviously advantageous structure of a nucleus and one electron, which has allowed them to grow into the most abundant element in our Universe. The Theorem also explains why we, human beings, billions of us, regardless of how distant we might be from one another, can also be so intimately interconnected as to share the same will to live, and the same need to love and be loved, and the same advantageous knowledge to be able to configure myriad elements into cohesive, self-reflective, self-generating and adaptable organic systems, which has allowed us to become, amidst the constant changes of our internal and external environments, the dominant and most ingenious species in our planet.
